Ermioni-Dhokos, the jewels of the Hydra Gulf
Located between Hydra and the shore of the Peloponnese, both the isolated island of Dhokos as well the picturesque fishing village of Ermioni in the mainland are excellent stops on your sailing itinerary.
The 'island who sees in infinity' (the imposing name of Dhokos in antiquity) is rightfully the first stop for every sailing boat leaving Hydra and travelling towards the Peloponnese. Beautiful and untamed it is nowadays home to fewer than 20 inhabitants (including the nuns from the convent of Agia Evrpaksia), several goats, one traditional stone lighthouse, archaeological ruins and secluded coves ideal for swimming.
Equally charming is the picture-perfect fishing town of Ermioni on the shore of the Peloponnese. Located at the stem of a wooded cape and surrounded by pine trees, it is considered the most tranquil of the two main towns along the Greek Riviera (the other one being cosmopolitan Porto Heli).
Ermioni, known for its fishing taverns and pomegranates, has a distinct look and feel of an island. Something that you will discover yourself while wandering around its paved streets, before going swimming at the many excellent surrounding beaches.
Don't leave without visiting the Bisti pinewood at the edge of the peninsula. It offers both relaxing views as well as the ruins of ancient sanctuaries, temples, medieval and cyclopean walls that lay there. Another must-visit is the beautiful chapel of Agia Kiriaki, on top of the Pronos hill, that offers a majestic view of the blue sea and the fertile plains full of olive and citrus trees.
