Spetses: Yachting & aristocratic ambience

Located at the entrance of the Saronic GulfSpetses is picturesque, graceful and car-free. A sophisticated island with an unrivalled naval tradition that cannot but be included in your sailing itinerary. 

The island's of scents / isola di spezzie (its name during the Venetian era) manorial capital is built on the gentle slopes above the wide bay containing its harbour with a view of Kosta and cosmopolitan Porto Heli (the jewel of the Greek Riviera) across the water on the shore of the Peloponnese. Ιt's central hub of activity is Poseidon square in cosmopolitan Dapia where the cafes, shops and the imposing captain's mansions (kapetanospita) are located. Start exploring the island by foot, bicycle, yacht or -if you are in a romantic mood- on a horse-drawn carriage. Make sure to visit the picturesque old harbour with the tarsanades (traditional shipyards) and the Castelli village and Kounoupitsa which are the other main attractions in the island. If possible, visit Spetses during September, when Armata, a truly impressive re-enactment of a naval battle takes place ever since 1931.

 

Must-Visit Attractions in Spetses

  • The 17th-century Mansion of Laskarina Bouboulina, one of the greatest heroines of the Independence War of 1821, that now operates as a museum. 
  • The 18th-century mansion of Hatzigiannis Mexis (a prominent citizen of Spetses) that houses Spetses Historical Museum. The exhibits include findings from the oldest shipwreck in the world, that of Dokos Island, rare pottery and the relics of Laskarina Bouboulina.
  • The Cathedral of Ayios Nikolaos where the island's Independence flag was raised on 3rd April 1821. 
  • The Anargyreios Korgialeneios School in Kounoupitsa that houses the Centre of Environmental Education.
  • The unique athletic events of Spetsathlon (the biggest triathlon in Greece organised every April) and Spetses Mini Marathon (organised every October).

Sail and Swim

Swimming on the islands celebrated beaches. Among the most popular are Agioi Anargyroi and Agia Paraskeyi with water sport facilities, secluded Xylokeriza, Vrelos that is surrounded by a dense pine forest, crystal clear watered Kaiki, Kounoupitsa and Zogeria with pine trees that stretch down to the beach and azure waters.

Ports & anchorages

Both the old port of Spetses in Baltiza and the new port in Dapia are suitable to cover your yacht's charter needs. Other options include the beautiful bay of Agii Anargyroi, the secluded bay of Agia Paraskevi and the bay of Zogeria and the Lazareto Cove.
